Protecting His Own by Cherise Sinclair

This is book 11 of the Masters of the Shadowlands series, which follows a group of friends through their various relationships as they all find love, discover the complications of relationships and have a few life-changing adventures. Sinclair does a great job of writing each book so that it could be read independently but I strongly suggest that the books be read in order to get a full understanding of everything that has happened to the group up to this point. At the very least I would recommend reading Breaking Free, which is where Nolan and Beth's story starts.

This book follows Nolan and Beth and their continued attempts to have children. The story is told in first person and switches between main characters perspectives as needed. This is organized by chapter which makes is easy to follow. Despite some extremely intense and emotional scenes, I couldn't put the book down. I ended up reading the whole thing in 2 days.

The overall story is less about the BDSM world and more about the characters and their lives. They still play and live the lifestyle, but with realistic alterations to accommodate the changes in their lives. Several of the characters in the series have children or are pregnant, and Beth has wanted children since If Only (book 8). This story focuses more on her and Nolan making some hard decisions about where they want their lives to go.

One of the great things about Sinclair is that the characters are intertwined. Each book focuses on a particular couple, but the other characters are still around and have lives. Occasionally it gets a little unrealistic - like all of the characters volunteering at the same place - but the overall series is very well done. I strongly recommend this book as it was one of the best in the series.
