It's Mother's Day. I've always downplayed the holiday. No point in forcing the Spawn to fake appreciation because of a day on the calendar.
When they are appreciative, they show it. When they are mad at me they show that too. It's part of being human to accept that your offspring will not always think your the best thing ever. I'm here to teach them how to be responsible, caring, functional adults. Not be their best friend or coddle their every want.
Some people say I'm mean because I won't rush out to buy them a new Xbox or because they are required to take out the trash. Some have gone so far as to call me abusive. Apparently they have no idea what real abuse looks like. Telling a child they have to do basic chores is not abuse - it's raising responsible children.
